My First Wedding Cake

I recently caught up with a girlfriend who I had known since high school. She called me to save the date for her wedding. I was so excited for her! She had been with her partner for a very long time and they were finally making it official! She said that she had been following my facebook page and blog and loves what I have been doing, especially my figurines, and so she asked me if I would like to make her wedding cake. I was stunned! This was what I had dreamed about eventually being able to do – to make beautiful, elegant, towering wedding cakes. I told her I didn’t know whether I had enough confidence to be able to make a wedding cake since up to that point I had only made birthday cakes, and there is a big difference between making a cake for a toddler old versus making a cake for the wedding couple on their special day.  I knew they would have spent thousands of dollars to make the day perfect … I didn’t want to be the one to make it memorable for all the wrong reasons. So I agreed very apprehensively, however I felt quite privileged she thought of asking me to be involved in her special day. She sent me lots of photos of wedding cakes in which she liked and gave me some ideas as to what she wanted. We discussed the theme of her cake. She wanted something simple but elegant with purple flowers to match her bouquet and sash that she was wearing around her dress. She also wanted some personalized figurines of herself and her partner. Her partner is an avid badminton player so they wanted to incorporate that into the figurines. She also gave me photos of her dress and bouquet for me to model the figurine on. I gave myself plenty of time to prepare for the cake and to make the flowers and figurines as well. I decided on a 4 tier cake (14’, 12’, 10’, 8’).  The bottom tier was decorated in a border of swags, the third tier was decorated with a quilted pattern with edible pearls, the second tier was decorated with stripes dusted with pearl lustre dust and the top tier was left plain. I finished the cake with a string of pearls for the border of each tier. I handmade closed peonies using gum paste and dusted them with purple petal dust, 3 large peonies for the top tier and 4 smaller peonies which cascaded down the cake. Finally I attached the figurines on the fondant covered board.

Transportation of the cake to the reception venue was by far the most stressful part of the whole process – no one really tells you about that part of it! I had read suggestions online and on cake forums about the conflicting method of cake transporting such as taking the cake to the venue unassembled in separate tiers to transporting the cake fully assembled placed on a flat ground with a non stick mat etc. I had decided to take my cake tiers securely stacked, however I packed the flowers and figurines separately to avoid breakage. My husband drove and I had the stacked cake on my lap in a box (which I could barely see over) with a non-slip mat underneath. With every pot hole, bump and turn in the road I think my blood pressure went up a point! It was a great relief when we finally reached the venue, cake intact. I did pack an emergency “cake repair kit” just in case the unimaginable happened but luckily it all worked out fine. I was able to assemble and put the finishing touches on the cake whilst the caterers were still setting up.

I have to say the wedding was amazing and arguably one of the best I had been too. They had some fantastic personal touches throughout the night which reflected perfectly who they were as individuals and a couple. A highlight of the night was definitely the surprise Michael Jackson impersonator who performed a 30 minute fully choreographed tribute show with back up dancers. He was amazing!! I was really happy that I was able to contribute to their special day by giving them a cake as a gift, and that they had the faith in my caking ability.
